Going through a break up could have been better than going through a flare up. You heal after a break up, but you don’t after a flare up. Psoriasis isn’t curable after all. You go through a cycle of flare ups caused by a gazillion of things. After you cleaned up your diet, put on the ointments, and did a whole lot of ‘treatments’ you experience having smooth skin for a period of time. Sometimes a few days, few months, or even years, but then these tiny little dots of psoriasis come back again. And sometimes, with a vengeance.
I am going through a flare up right now and I’m telling you, MY SCALP IS ON FIRE. And so is my torso and my legs. I used to be so down and depressed whenever I had a flare up. I used to think that ‘This is it. This is the end of me.’ However, after going through this for a long time, I’ve managed to keep a cool head and have a system I follow to clear my skin. It does take a whole lot of effort but it does help me clear my skin in a couple of weeks.
I don’t stress too much
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, DO NOT STRESS TOO MUCH. This is vital because tackling this monster of a disease needs the right mindset. You do not go into battle with a defeated mindset. You go into the battle with a victorious mindset. You can do this. You will go through this. This too shall pass.
Cleaning my diet
I then try to make an audit of what I’ve been eating the past few weeks or days. I try to stay away from food that I know triggers my psoriasis but sometimes I succumb to the ‘temptation’. I’m human and I do miss my flat white, the sugary chocolatey dessert, and cheese. There are days where I let myself consume them but in very minimal amounts. But there are occasions like parties, brunches, catch ups, and the like where I just eat and drink as much as I like. So then I know that I will have a flare up. And then clean up my diet again and stay away from these food-triggers.
More intense and elaborate skin care
On days that I have flare ups, I have a system that I know works for me that will ease my flare up in a week. This system is for my scalp, down to my toes. I have my tried and tested skin care products that I use to help me with my flare ups. I also use my dermatologist’s prescribed topical medications that will help alleviate it.
I sleep early on these days. I try to get as much sleep as I can to help my skin heal and regenerate. Lack of sleep can also trigger flare ups for me. This sometimes happens when I am so hooked with a Korean drama and I am wide awake till late! So I try to stay away from it and sleep early.
I do this everyday as long as I have the flare up. I then slowly go back to my normal routine once I have smooth skin again.
It’s not easy going through a flare up, but as chronic skin warriors, we face this battle everyday. Stay strong and know that you are not alone.
